Volunteer of the Month- Nov 2017: Emily

1. What is your background (profession/ workplace/ training)?

I’m a junior doctor 2nd year out of medical school working at Eastern Health. I’m currently on Obstetrics & Gynaecology and my aspiration is to be a GP so I’m applying for the program next year.

2. What inspired you to become a Water Well volunteer?

I love how Water Well is providing relevant, practical health information, to communities that would often miss out due to language, cultural and other barriers. It’s filling a niche gap in healthcare. It’s also is a cool way to apply my knowledge in a totally different setting; out in the community chatting to people.

3. Please share one of your favourite Water Well sessions or moments.

My first session was the Dallas Community Hub women’s group and an older lady who had listened intently but not asked many questions came and sat next to me after the session, to ensure that I took home some of her home made bread! The whole group was very welcoming and appreciative, and invited me to stay and eat with them after the session.

4. What tips do you have for new volunteers?

The first session seems intimidating, but 5 minutes in you realise that actually you’re just chatting about stuff that you know, and that the group is engaged and curious!
