Volunteer of the Month – December 2023: Wendy

1. What is your background (profession/ workplace/ training)?

I am a Registered Nurse with a clinical background in cardiac nursing but have spent many years in management.

2. What inspired you to become a volunteer with The Water Well Project?

I saw it promoted by one of the professional organisations - I think it was AHHA.

3. Please share one of your favourite The Water Well Project sessions or moments.

We were talking to Chinese community group on bone and joint health when one of the participants - who had been fiddling with his mobile phone most the session - shows us images of his hip and femur which had a spectacular amount of metal work. He had injured himself slipping on a step in the rain and wanted everyone to be very careful because look what happened to him and he was younger than everyone else - he is 78 years of age!!!!

4. What tips do you have for new volunteers?

Use The Water Well Project resources to plan the session but be prepared to change your plans based on what participants want.

5. “I volunteer because…”

The Water Well Project is completely different from the other things I do in my life and it is great meeting new people - both volunteers and participants.
