Volunteer of the Month – August 2023: Leah

1. What is your background (profession/ workplace/ training)?

My back ground is a registered nurse, who has a worked in surgical nursing, public health and very recently commenced a role as a drug, alcohol and hepatitis nurse.

2. What inspired you to become a volunteer with The Water Well Project?

I was inspired to volunteer for The Water Well Project by another volunteer Hirukshi. I had just completed a post graduate certificate in Public Health and was looking for an organisation that aligned with my values and was an area of interest to increase my knowledge and be able to give back to my local community.

3. Please share one of your favourite The Water Well Project sessions or moments.

I have only completed one volunteer session, I thoroughly enjoyed the session and was pleasantly surprised by the ease of conversations and questions that were asked. Today, I actually ran into a participant who attended the session who was seeking care at a community health service that was discussed in the session. We were able to have chat through 'Google Translate'; this was very heartwarming for me.

4. What tips do you have for new volunteers?

My tips would be don’t be nervous... I was very nervous not knowing what to expect. Enjoy the experience and learnings. It is a very rewarding experience.

5. “I volunteer because…”

I volunteer because I am very passionate about providing health education that increases health literacy to populations at need. I enjoy learning about other cultures and get great satisfaction out of giving back to my local community.
