Volunteer of the Month- June 2015: Tim

Timothy Mar

1. What is your background (profession/ workplace/ training)?
Medicine (aspiring Paediatrician!).

2. What inspired you to become a Water Well volunteer?
Refugees and asylum seekers are some of the most traumatised people living in Australia and globally. The Water Well Project is a fantastic way to contribute to this vulnerable community in a meaningful way with the skills I have, and is heaps of fun!

3. Please share one of your favourite Water Well sessions or moments.
My hands down favourite session was a Child Development session with some parents and their toddlers!
Favourite moment was having the "Indiana Jones" theme song play as the primary school bell in the middle of a parents education session.

4. What tips do you have for new volunteers?
Providing sessions is important and serious, but don't forget to have a bit of fun as well! Other tips: make sure to prepare thoroughly, but remember that groups have often come from places with little to no health literacy. Sometimes sessions just need to be very basic (covering what might be "common knowledge" in Australia).
