Volunteer of the Month – October 2025: Rachel

1. What is your background (profession/ workplace/ training)?

I am a final year medical student at the University of Melbourne, with a keen interest in paediatric medicine and health education.

2. What inspired you to become a volunteer with The Water Well Project?

I loved the premise of The Water Well Project, with its aim of connecting and improving health literacy amongst community groups from diverse backgrounds. As a migrant myself, I empathise with the struggles one can face when in a completely different environment with different health services, and the impact that well-delivered health education can have. And of course, having the wonderful Linny as my mentor last year has inspired me to strive to contribute and make a difference in our communities.

3. Please share one of your favourite The Water Well Project sessions or moments.

My favourite session was with a multicultural group of students from the Box Hill Institute on Navigating the Australian Healthcare System. It was lovely to hear the group share stories of their experiences and tips with each other, as well as seeing the lightbulb moments when participants understood when would be more appropriate to go to their general practitioner versus the emergency department.

4. What tips do you have for new volunteers?

It is such a rewarding experience volunteering at The Water Well Project sessions. You get to meet new people, explore different cultures, share some of your knowledge and learn new things yourself! Familiarise yourself with the topic templates given but be ready to go along with what each community group is interested in.
