Volunteer of the Month – October 2020: Blake

1. What is your background (profession/ workplace/ training)?
Dermatology Research Fellow (Doctor)

2. What inspired you to become a Water Well volunteer?
As a medical registrar I was treating a lot of patients who weren't born in Australia. They often had very poor health literacy which impacted their overall health. I like teaching and thought it would be a good opportunity to engage in a bit of preventative health.

3. Please share one of your favourite Water Well sessions or moments.

One day I forgot I was hosting a session in the morning and forgot to set an alarm. I woke up to a text message politely enquiring if I was having technical difficulties connecting to the Zoom meeting. Fortunately for me this was during the COVID-19 lockdown and I was working from home that day. After a few choice words (which nobody else was present to hear) I rolled out of bed, put on a shirt and joined the meeting with tousled hair and bleary eyes. "Terribly sorry about that, I was having some difficulty signing in to the Zoom account."

4. What tips do you have for new volunteers?
Set more than one reminder for the session in your calendar ?!
